What is Building Information Modeling ?

BIM means Building Information Modeling. BIM Modeling is a process to create and provide a digital representation of an object by integrating different levels of data. BIM Engineering is an excellent collaboration which allows architects, engineers, contractors and developers for planning, designing and constructing a structure or building. Building information Modeling or BIM Engineering is a 3 dimensional digital representation of physical and dimensional characteristics of a building which is used by the Architects and Designers.

In Building Information Modeling, “B” stands for building, “I” stands for Information and “M” stands for modeling. Building means it does not stand for a place or an asset alone, it covers all the structures of Civil and Architectural industry. It is the As-built form as real.  “I “stands for information which is integrated within the BIM Model. “M” Stands for Modelling and the modelling data are in the form of BIM Models which contain even the smallest details.

WHAT ARE THE BIM MODELING SOFTWARES

The Building Information Modeling software’s used in Architectural BIM, Structural BIM and MEP BIM as supportive are,

  • Autodesk Revit
  • ArchiCAD
  • Vector works
  • Tekla
  • BIM 360
  • SketchUp
  • Autodesk Civil 3D etc.

Most advanced software used for BIM Architecture Modeling is Revit From Autodesk. It is the best tool for 3D Design, Drafting and structural detailing for Architecture, Structure and MEP. Structural BIM provides accurate 3D Modeling, improved BIM Coordination and BIM Integration and supports clash detection. Always keep in mind that Revit is not BIM. Revit is made for Supporting BIM and it helps Architectural engineers and designers for design, simulate and visualize the data within the BIM Model.

TYPES OF BIM MODELING AND ITS SUPPORTIVE REVIT MODELING

Types of BIM Modeling in construction industries are Structural BIM, Architecture BIM, MEP BIM and Heritage BIM Modeling. Structural BIM Modeling includes detailed information of building structural elements like columns, beams and foundation etc. Structural BIM Software’s are AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUP, ArchiCAD and ETABS. Structural Analysis by STAADPro.

Architecture Building Information Modeling includes detailed information of building layout, Spatial relationships and structural members of walls, columns and doors. For developing Architectural BIM Model, using software’s of Revit, ArchiCAD, SketchUP for the building design and detailed layouts.

MEP BIM Modeling stands for Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing Modeling. MEP Systems includes Modeling for HVAC Systems (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), Plumbing system (Water Supply, Drainage and waste water), Electrical System (Power, lighting and communication), Fire protection system and Security system.

Building Information Modeling

Structural BIM – detailed information of building structural elements like columns, beams and foundation etc.

Architecture BIM – detailed information of building layout, Spatial relationships and structural members of walls, columns and doors.

MEP BIM-Modeling for HVAC Systems (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning), Plumbing system (Water Supply, Drainage and waste water), Electrical System (Power, lighting and communication), Fire protection system and Security system.

Heritage BIM – HBIM for steel structural detailing and Modeling for cultural heritage s and Architectures.

BIM LOD / BIM LEVEL OF DETAILING

BIM Level of Detailing shall be LOD 100, LOD 200,LOD 300,LOD 400 and LOD 500.Following are the details of LOD or Level of detailing in BIM Engineering.

LOD 100- Concept design. It is a basic information level of building. Only conceptual model creation is possible in this beginning stage. Basic Parameters of area, height, volume, location and orientation are defined.

LOD 200-Schematic design. It is a generic model of a structure including size, shape and its orientation with geometric information.

LOD 300-Detailed Design. It is a graphical representation of a system or structure including the detailing of size, shape, orientation, location, area and volume etc.

LOD 350-Construction documentation. It is a detailed model that represents how building elements interface with various systems/building elements.

LOD 400-Fabrication and Assembly. Detailing of a fabrication or assembly or structure.

LOD 500-As built. Structure Modelled as constructed assemblies for operations including the detailing of shape, location, area, volume and shape.
